Designed by Colleen East.
Adult Size
Needle: Four size U.S. 3 double pointed needles (dpn)
Gauge: 6.5 sts/inch, 16 rows = 1 ¼” in stockinette stitch.
Yarn: Flat Feet by Conjoined Creations
Note: All Sl sts to be slipped as if to purl (except SSK)
Working with Flat Feet
Knit directly from the flat –no skeins, no balls, no tangles! Remove the waste yarn (undyed) and discard. If you wish to knit two socks simultaneously, split at the center waste yarn and start the second sock on the second half. As this yarn has been previously knit into a flat, there will be a crimp in the working yarn. Knit tightly for socks as you normally would, knowing that the crimp will release during the blocking process and your stitches will become even. Flat will stuff into pocket or purse for easy knitting while on the go.
Leg:
Cast on 56 sts. Distribute sts evenly on 3 needles. Be careful not to twist at the needle break when joining. Work ribbing: K3, P3, K1, P1 for 2.5”.
Work leg and top of foot using ladder pattern:
Rounds 1-5: *K5, P1, K1, P1, *.
Round 6: *P6, K1, P1, * .
Work this pattern until work measures 8”. End with row 6 of pattern.
Heel Flap:
Knit 14 sts, transfer balance of sts onto dpn#2, turn. Sl 1 as if to P, p27, transfer balance of sts to dpn#2. Divide sts on dpn#2 between dpn#2 and dpn #3 or onto a piece of yarn or cable for ease to work.
Working back and forth on 28 dpn#1 heel sts only, beginning with a RS row:
Row 1: * Sl 1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2: Sl 1, P all sts across to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows for a total of 28 rows, ending with a WS (row 2) row.
Turn Heel:
Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, k15, k2tog, K1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, K6, K2tog, K1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, P7, P2tog, P1, turn.
Continue in like manner until 16 sts remain.
Shape Instep:
With RS of sock facing you, beginning with heel sts on dpn#1, k16 heel sts, pick up and knit 15 sts along edge of heel flap, pick up and knit 1 stitch at junction between heel flap and top
of foot (the “ditch” stitch).
On dpn#2, K1,P1, K1,P1, follow pattern for 24 sts.
On dpn#3, pick up and knit one stitch at junction between top of foot and side of heel flap (again the ditch stitch), pick up and knit 15 sts along edge of heel flap. You now have 76 sts.
Still using dpn#3, K8 sts of heel flap, ending in center of heel, this will become the starting place of every new round.
Distribute sts if necessary so that there are 24 sts on dpn#1, 28 sts on dpn#2, and 24 sts on dpn#3.
Shape instep as follows:
Round 1: (dpn#1) K to last 2 sts, K2tog;
(dpn#2) continue in pattern;
(dpn#3) SSK, K balance of sts.
Round 2: (dpn#1) K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1;
(dpn#2) continue in pattern;
(dpn#3) K1, SSK, K balance.
Round 3: (dpn#1) Knit all;
(dpn#2) continue in pattern;
(dpn#3) Knit all
Repeat rounds two and three until 56 sts remain.
Foot:
Knit foot, continuing pattern on dpn#2 until work measures 8-10” from back of heel, or 2” less than desired sock length.
Toe:
Round 1: K to 4 sts away from end of dpn#1, K2tog, k2.
(dpn#2) K2, SSK, K to 4 sts away from end (note – pattern has now stopped completely), K2tog, K2.
(dpn#3) K2, SSK at beginning of, K to end of round.
Round 2: Knit
Repeat these 2 rounds until 28 sts remain. Continue to work toe with round 1 only until only 16 sts remain. K the sts on dpn#1 on to dpn#3. To eliminate “cat ears” at the toe, pass the second st from the end of the dpn over the end st and off the end of the needle. Repeat at all other ends, 6 sts remain on each needle. Graft the two sets of sts together with the Kitchener stitch.
Finish the socks by weaving in the yarn ends securely, reinforcing the join at the cuff if necessary. Flat Feet
socks must be blocked to remove the crimp from the initial knitting. Wash the socks by hand and lay flat to dry (forming to shape). Subsequent washings may be done in the machine
